Primary, backup, and nothing confusing.
A connection is one account with a provider. Add as many as you like, then choose which one is primary and which is the backup. A connection can't be both.
In use for every message
Used when the primary fails
Switched off in its Edit form; skipped
A required detail is missing or a saved key can't be read
The WordPress default mailer, when it isn't primary
Email waits for you
A new email connection is saved but not used until you click Set as primary. WordPress stays the default until then.
SMS starts right away
The first SMS connection becomes primary automatically, because there's no built-in SMS to fall back on.
Fixed once saved
A connection's provider can't change later, because its stored secrets belong to it. Add a new connection instead.
Works with almost any mailbox.
Google Workspace, Microsoft 365, Amazon SES, Zoho and most others. Usually port 587 with STARTTLS, or 465 with SSL/TLS. Some services need an app password rather than your normal one.
