Store and customer alerts need WooCommerce. Without it they're shown but locked. Only switch on customer alerts if your customers have agreed to receive texts. The rules differ by country, and you're responsible for following them.
Three steps, about three minutes.
Connect a gateway
Settings → Connections → Add SMS connection. Your first SMS connection becomes primary straight away, since there's no built-in way to send texts to fall back on.
Set your phone number
Settings → SMS → Admin phone number, in international format such as +14155550123. Alerts for you go there.
Switch alerts on
VuloMail → SMS Alerts. Each alert's message box appears when it's on. Leave it empty for the default, or write your own.
Small rules that save real money.
Phone numbers, normalised
Numbers starting with + or 00 are international. Others get your default country code, with leading zeros dropped. Without a country code, a national number is refused rather than guessed.
Segments you can predict
160 plain characters per text, or 70 with emoji and non-Latin scripts. Longer texts are split and billed as several. 1,530 characters is the hard ceiling.
One text per order change
Processing, completed, refunded and cancelled each have their own customer alert. Any other status falls through to the general alert, never both.
Built-in restraint
Admin-login alerts only fire for administrators. Spam comments are ignored. The email-failed alert sends at most one text every 15 minutes and ignores test emails.

- Digits only, like 1 or 44. Added to numbers written without one.
